Community Events

Welcome to this week’s North Harbour Blog. As usual we’re pretty busy! Our construction team has been busy working on our second park, Reflections Park, which is scheduled to open in October. We’re also putting the last few things in place for our upcoming Spring Fair on September 16th and Linda, our Community Events Coordinator, has her planning hat on as we look into putting on some Expos in the Sales Office.

Happy Father's day animation

But, most importantly, we’re looking forward to celebrating Father’s Day next Sunday 3rd September. If, like us, you’re not quite sure what to do for Dad, we’ve put together some ideas of what’s on in and around our beautiful Moreton Bay Region.

Father’s Day

Father’s Day dates at least as far back as the Middle Ages where it was first celebrated as the feast day of St Joseph (Jesus’ earthly father and therefore a super famous Dad!).

Father’s Day as we know it was not celebrated (outside Catholic traditions) until the 20th century. As a civic celebration in the US, it was inaugurated in the early 20th century to complement Mother’s Day. The first observance of a “Father’s Day” was held on July 5, 1908, in Fairmont, West Virginia, in the Williams Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church South, now known as Central United Methodist Church. Grace Golden Clayton was mourning the loss of her father, when in December 1907, the Monongah Mining Disaster in nearby Monongah killed 361 men, 250 of them fathers, leaving around a thousand fatherless children. Clayton suggested that her pastor Robert Thomas Webb honour all those fathers.

Clayton’s event did not take off outside Fairmont and the day was not celebrated again for many years despite several attempts to get a “Father’s Day” celebration recognised. In fact, despite three US Presidents trying to make Father’s Day a nationally celebrated holiday it took a fourth, President Richard Nixon, to get it through Congress and the day was made a permanent national holiday when he signed it into law in 1972.

Father’s Day Community Events

If Dad is a car afficianodo then look no further than All Aussie Father’s Day. This a family friendly event aimed at celebrating all things Australian, including our love for great cars. Grab Dad and bring your pride and joy down to Lakeside Park- Kurwongbah, for a day of track cruising, track challenge, show n’ shine, face painting for the kids, trade stands and Aussie food. It’s sure to be a great day out.

If Dad is into a more laid-back vibes, then a visit to Scarborough Sounds is the perfect way for the whole family to spend Father’s Day afternoon. On Sunday, September 3rd, join us at Scarborough Beach Park from 4pm-8pm for an incredible evening of musical entertainment. Best of all, the event is FREE to attend. Bring your own picnic or treat yourself to some gourmet market food, spread out a blanket, and enjoy a musical feast framed against the stunning Scarborough foreshore. http://www.visitmoretonbayregion.com.au/whats-on/events/scarborough-sounds

What’s On at North Harbour

Community Events

You might have seen our intrepid videographer around the neighbourhood this week, filming several of our brave residents who have agreed to act as “North Harbour Ambassadors”. The videos are currently in the editing suite and will be appearing on a website, Facebook page and advertising near you, soon. Thank you to everyone who has lent their support to this project – meeting everyone during the filming process was great fun and I’m not just saying that because of the cake and sandwiches.

Also this week the BBQs went in at Reflections Park and the shelters are finished! Next to go in is the play equipment, art sculptures, exercise equipment and tricycle/ scooter paths. We’re on schedule to be completed and ready to open in October, so keep an eye on our Facebook page for event details.

Aaaaand…drum roll please…Our new Sales Office and Display Village will commence construction in November! Yes, you heard right, we’ll be moving across to the other side of Buckley Road in 2018 as we move into the next phase of construction.
