Moreton Bay to benefit from Brisbane’s Olympic legacy

The Moreton Bay region can look forward to huge tourism, infrastructure and economic gains as Brisbane takes its prestigious place alongside Tokyo, Beijing and London as an Olympic host city.

The positive effects of hosting an Olympic and Paralympic Games will be felt across southeast Queensland for generations to come.

Moreton Bay will benefit from a world-class new community sports hub that was included in Brisbane’s winning bid, ensuring our region will experience the Olympic excitement firsthand.

The Moreton Bay Indoor Sports Centre at The Mill is a new venue proposed to host boxing at the 2032 Summer Olympics. From the Men’s Featherweight to Women’s Welterweight, Moreton Bay locals will truly be in the box seat.

Creating a lasting legacy for the region, the 9-court facility will have capacity for 7,000 spectators. After the Games, the venue will be repurposed for local sporting and recreation uses.

Existing infrastructure in the region, including the $15.8 million South Pine Indoor Centre and Touch Football clubhouse, is already Olympics ready and can cater for at least 11 different sports and activities including basketball and wheelchair sports.

Placed in the heart of it all

Much like the Games, the North Harbour Marina precinct will be a major drawcard for south-east Queensland, creating a destination filled with opportunities.

These opportunities span from sports and recreational to lifestyle and retail. Some of the major attractions at the North Harbour Marina precinct include….

Heritage Park precinct – Visitors to the region can experience its rich and diverse history at the North Harbour Heritage Park. From heritage relics that tell the stories of early European settlement to the South Sea Islander community ancestors that once occupied this space, the Heritage Park offers endless ways to learn and explore.

Riverfront recreation – With more than 319 hectares of riverfront parkland for all to enjoy, the Marina precinct will be a popular destination for hosting events and activities before, during and after the Games. New access to almost 12km of the Caboolture River’s southern bank will allow visitors to enjoy water-based activities or simply relax with a picnic along the river.

Village – A vibrant heart of the precinct, the North Harbour Marina village will be the go-to place for picking up specialty gifts and day-to-day essentials or staying longer for a meal and refreshments at one of the many boardwalk cafes and restaurants. The only significant marina village between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast, the North Harbour Marina precinct will be on the bucket list for many Olympic Games visitors.

Tourism – Where else can you experience scuba diving, sailing and riverfront entertainment all in one location? The Marina precinct will bring endless opportunities for visitors to truly experience the beauty of Queensland and Moreton Bay. Not to mention the economic benefits a south-east Queensland Olympic and Paralympic Games will bring to local businesses!

North Harbour Marine Hub to become economic powerhouse for Moreton Bay

North Harbour is set to become a world-leading marine industry hub, fast-tracking the tourism sector and providing an economic bonanza to Moreton Bay.

Attracting a significant slice of Australia’s $68 billion maritime industry to the region, the proposed marina will deliver a new wave of employment opportunities across all facets of the boating and tourism industries. This is in addition to around 70 staff required for dry boat stacking and hardstand operations.

Assisting Moreton Bay’s vital post-COVID 19 recovery, a technology TAFE supporting local employers by producing skilled employees such as apprentice marine technicians could become a world-class training and skills development hub in a supportive environment at North Harbour. Currently there is limited resources for marine apprentices between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast. An educated and skilled workforce will be essential to the industry’s growth and development in the region.

As the heart of North Harbour, the marina will consist of 400 berths, around 500 dry storage docks, 562 private pontoons and fuel facilities. Fantastic marine tourism opportunities will be created for recreational water-based businesses including bareboat yacht hire and fishing and dive charters.

The marina will seamlessly connect to North Harbour Business Park, which is expected to feature additional marine-related businesses, delivering a marine industry cluster to the north of Brisbane.

The Australian marine industry is a key driver in supporting the nation’s economy and is one of the fastest growing sectors.

Recreational and commercial fishing, transport and tourism are some of the marine-based activities that contribute the most to our total economic output.

With the North Harbour Marina Precinct set to declared Queensland’s next Priority Development Area, the project will inject a massive $707 million a year into the Moreton Bay region.

The marina alone will deliver a substantial marina village with retail, tourism and entertainment uses. The precinct will also provide 600 new apartments and 600 detached homes as part of the marina village, 800 dwellings in a canal estate.

The masterplanned community also includes 319 hectares of recreational and regional open space and is expected to be home to around 12,000 residents along Caboolture River.
