Great Romance Movies
If you’ve left your Valentine’s Day run late or you’re more of a homebody and prefer to keep your displays of affection less public, you might be planning to stay in on Valentine’s Day and watch a movie. Below are some of the North Harbour team’s favourites – we’ve avoided anything where someone dies at the end i.e. Titanic, as sobbing is not generally on anyone’s list of Valentine’s requirements:
Love Actually: Billed as “the ultimate romantic comedy,” Love Actually involves over 12 main characters, each story showcasing different love stories over one Christmas. Well worth watching for Bill Nighy’s brilliantly funny performance, Colin Firth’s clumsy attempts to woo his Italian dream woman, and Hugh Grant’s turn as a lovelorn Prime Minister.
Pretty Woman: Lady of the night with a heart and legs as long as the average pavement falls for rich yuppie and teaches him to love in an updated Cinderella story. Perfect easy-watching popcorn movie to snuggle up and enjoy on Valentine’s Day.
10 Things I Hate About You: Heath Ledger’s breakout role – bad boy falls in love and tames unhappy misunderstood rage girl. This epic teen romance with a beautifully happy dream ending is based on Shakespeare’s comedy, The Taming of the Shrew, and offers loads of laughs and romance.
The Wedding Singer: Funny, sweet and endless awwwwws in this movie where the good guy gets the good girl and the happily ever after they deserve. And a cameo from Billy Idol!
Dirty Dancing: Nobody puts Baby in a corner! No, they don’t, do they Patrick Swayze?! Take that snobby mean parents! Yay for love, lakes and dancing! Always good to watch and an excuse for a spot of Lambada with your beloved…just don’t try the famous jumping onto raised arms dance moves unless you’re prepared to fall into the TV.
