Where Mother’s Day all began…

The modern holiday of Mother’s Day was first celebrated in 1908, when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother at St Andrew’s Methodist Church in rafton, West Virginia. Her campaign to make “Mother’s Day” a recognised holiday in the United States began in 1905, the year her mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, died.

Ann Reeves Jarvis was a peace activist who cared for wounded soldiers on both sides of the American Civil War, and created Mother’s Day Work Clubs to address public health issues. Her daughter Anna wanted to honour her mother by continuing the work she started and to set aside a day to honour all mothers, because she believed that mothers are “the person who has done more for you than anyone in the world”.

After some discussion in Congress and various States accepting the day as a public holiday, US President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation in 1914 designating Mother’s Day, held on the second Sunday in May, as a national holiday to honour mothers.

By the early 1920s, Hallmark Cards and other companies had started selling Mother’s Day cards and unfortunately Mother’s Day founder Anna Jarvis became resentful of the commercialisation of the holiday. She believed the companies had misinterpreted and exploited the idea of Mother’s Day, and that the emphasis of the holiday was on sentiment, not profit.

As a result, she organised boycotts of Mother’s Day, and threatened to issue against the companies involved. Jarvis argued that people should appreciate and honour their mothers through handwritten letters expressing their love and gratitude, instead of buying gifts and pre-made cards. Jarvis protested at a candy makers’ convention in Philadelphia in 1923, and at a meeting of American War Mothers in 1925. By this time, carnations had become associated with Mother’s Day, and the selling of carnations by the American War Mothers to raise money angered Jarvis, who was arrested for disturbing the peace.

Despite her misgivings, Mother’s Day has grown and is now celebrated in the majority of the world – albeit on different dates. Australian Mums share our date of the second Sunday in May with multiple countries; whereas Norway stands alone in celebrating on the second Sunday of February. What’s On For Mums in Moreton Shire

If you needed a reminder – Mother’s Day is just one week away, on Sunday May 14th. And, if you haven’t decided what to do yet, there is plenty on offer in our beautiful Moreton Bay region, one of the best Brisbane Communities.

  • Treat Mum to a breakfast or lunch at Scott Damien on the Lake: breakfast menu $17 per head including your choice of eggs benedict, big brekkie and waffles.
  • Our Community Partner Caboolture Sports Club is also hosting a Mother’s Day buffet breakfast in the showroom brasserie: all hot and cold food included, $22 per person for adults, $11 for children (kids under 3 free)
  • If you’re looking for something a bit different and have a party of 10 plus people, Reid’s Place on the Redcliffe Peninsula does a High Tea in the fountain courtyard “the perfect setting for a private High Tea dining experience reminiscent of Downtown Abbey.” The menu includes finger sandwiches, macaroons, biscuits and much more all served on fine china by waitresses in traditional attire. Private High Teas require a minimum of 10 guests (adults $45pp, kids $25 pp). Bookings are essential.
  • If food isn’t high on your Mum’s list of priorities then Moreton Bay has plenty of Sunday markets, walks through areas of outstanding natural beauty and events happening during the weekend

We hope you have a wonderful Mother’s Day – however you celebrate!

A big week at North Harbour this week as we celebrated another first – our Display Village’s first birthday!

Time has definitely flown by as our Sales Consultant Aidan Winter says: “One year ago on April 23rd Mayor Sutherland officially opened the North Harbour Display Village.  It is incredible to think that a year has passed since our Display Village launch event.

live show in the Village Park

It was a huge, spectacular day. We welcomed over 2,500 people to view our 35 Display Homes and as part of the celebration enjoyed a live show in the Village Park starring the Minions (with an opportunity for their fans to meet the little yellow superstars), a petting zoo, rides and fireworks as well as live music and street entertainment.

Construction is going extremely well and it’s great to see the progress of our latest construction stage, Stage 13A. Curbing and channelling and the road base are now proceeding well and there are just two lots remaining for sale in this stage. Stages 16 and 15 are also under construction.

Our Latest Release, Stage 15 – 1000 Acres as your backyard!

The launch of Stage 15 last week went even better than expected with 12 of the 32 lots in Stage 15 now sold.

As we mentioned last week, Lindquist (Stage 15) is only our second release to adjoin our extensive Open Space and Parklands area and as such marks another step towards achieving our completed masterplan.

Stage 15 First Home Buyers Grant

North Harbour is a unique residential development in the rapidly expanding northern corridor between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast. Situated on the banks of the Caboolture River, North Harbour has established a new benchmark in living. North Harbour has a special history and contains the heritage listed “Moray Fields” homestead site, which was the first European settlement in the area and dates from 1861. These remains contain significant areas of cultural heritage, which are proposed to become a publicly accessible interpretive centre.
