Are Markets your thing? North Harbour will have you right in the middle of it all!

We’ve focussed on many of the things that make our region naturally fabulous in previous blogs so in this week’s missive let’s talk about shopping.

Whether you’re a shop till you drop kind of person or only venture out to grab necessities, the Moreton Bay Region abounds with shopping opportunities making it simple and cost-effective to shop locally. Not only do we have marvellous boutiques and shopping centres, we have an abundance of magnificent local markets. And, with the silly season rapidly bearing down on us, where better to find a bargain?

First up, this Saturday (22 October) is the annual Lioness Spring Festival at Beachmere, from 8am to 2 pm in Clayton Park, Moreton Tce, Beachmere (just the other side of Caboolture River from North Harbour). Lots of shopping choices from a variety of stalls including 3D pics, Cambodian scarves, sarongs, jewellery, potted plants (including gingers, anthuriums and more), cosy cushions, Lions Christmas cakes and puddings, farm-fresh fruit and veggies, Springvale wines and honey, icecreams, gluten-free snags and more.

Entertainment includes face and body painting, sumo wrestling, clowns, baby chicken display, scorpion line dancers, Beachmere State School Choir, Community Choir, Dance4Kids, Zumba, and singer Lyndal Smith will be performing.

Some other fun events include the Famous Annual Pet Parade, and this year, a Thong Throwing Competition. There will also be a Dry Regatta – folk make their own “boat”, which must be environmentally friendly and safe.

One of the biggest local markets is just up the road about 15 minutes north of North Harbour at Caboolture. Held every Sunday, the Caboolture Country Markets house over 500 stalls including food, plants, fruit, vegetables, art, craft, new clothing, footwear, computers and general bric-a-brac. It’s a huge event and well worth a visit – make sure you take a hat, water and a comfortable pair of shoes…it’s massive and you’ll probably need more than one visit to get it all in.

If you love boating, then you’ll love North Harbour!

This week’s Blog is all about boating. Whether you own a boat, wish you owned a boat or, better yet, have a friend with a boat – Queenslanders in general love being in or on the water.

Over 250,000 Queenslanders currently own a registered boat or water vessel of some description, varying from tinnies and jet skis right up to luxurious powerboats and mega yachts. Our stunning Moreton Bay region is particularly well-subscribed and the recreational boating industry generates thousands of jobs locally every year.

North Harbour benefits from this great location between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast, and as the name indicates, a marina is part of our masterplan to add to our residential mix of North Harbour Homes. We’re currently working through the approvals process with Local and State Government.

The proposed* marina village will be the social heart of North Harbour, offering a vibrant mix of commercial, retail, community, residential and recreational activities. It will give a significant boost to Queensland and Australia’s water based lifestyle in a recreational and commercial sense. It provides direct access to Moreton Bay and will play a key role in meeting the strong demand for marine related industry development.

The vision for North Harbour is to create one of the most vibrant recreational marina hubs within Queensland and Australia. Based around a world-class marina, with associated marine industries with an education and training centre, this precinct provides a significant driver for economic growth and workforce development while also helping to satisfy the growing regional demand marina berths and marine facilities. The marine industry generates an annual turnover of $8 billion, and exports $1 billion in products and services (stats taken from www.bia.org.au).

The North Harbour proposed marina includes a 350 berth marina, 500 dry boat stacker, associated shipyard, cluster of marine industry businesses, marina village, neighbourhood shopping centre, public spaces and promenades, cafés and restaurants, housing choices, apartments and townhouses.

Fortunately, recreational boating is extremely well supported by national industry bodies such as the Boating Industry Association (BIA). The BIA provides a forum to discuss industry needs, problems and solutions and serves as the representative of the industry to Federal, State and Local Government departments and agencies, as well as other industry bodies, corporate interests, allied organisations, media and the general public.

The BIA represents over 90% of the recreational and light commercial marine industry and their main objective is to support and improve the sustainability of the recreational and light commercial marine industry. As part of their efforts to promote the Australian Marine industry nationally and globally they run a programme of boat shows and events throughout the year including the Brisbane Boat Show and Sanctuary Cove Boat Show.

Locally, organisations such as Bribie Island’s Volunteer Marine Rescue provide a vital service, keeping everyone safe on the water. This Sunday (16 October) they are playing host to the Combined Services Expo offering a free, action-packed day of emergency services demonstrations, kid’s activities and family fun.

VMR Bribie Island Commodore, Bob Skinner, said local emergency agencies would demonstrate the latest in marine rescue, firefighting and policing technology.

“Bring the whole family and get up close with our local emergency services heroes,” said Commodore Skinner. “There will be a jumping castle, stalls, free giveaways and plenty of emergency services personnel on hand to give you advice”.

Meet local firefighters, police and ambulance officers, marine rescue, SES and Red Cross volunteers, and many more. Equipment on display will include a fire truck, water cannon, rescue boats, and other high-tech equipment.

Commodore Skinner said the Bribie Island Combined Emergency Services Expo is part of the state-wide Get Ready Queensland campaign to help local residents get ready for the bushfire and storm season.

“Coming along to the expo is a great way to learn more about how you can get your family ready,” he said. “If you do a little to prepare, we all accomplish a lot as a community”.

Bribie Island Station Officer Trevor Stark said local fire fighters, Rural Fire Service and SES volunteers would be able to provide local residents with lots of practical tips about how to get ready.

“Locals should come along armed with their questions about how to prepare themselves and their property for the threat of bushfire or severe weather,” Mr Stark said.
